TRADITIONAL WORSHIP INFORMATION
Worship Begins @ 9:30 am
This is a creative traditional service of worship that takes place in our gorgeous sanctuary. We use a lot of music, which is a mix of traditional, gospel, ethnic and more contemporary styles. Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month. A special time of Fellowship in our church Parlor is offered after the service.
LENT AND EASTER: A SEASON OF CONTRASTS AND CONTRADICTIONS
Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness allowed him an opportunity to face temptation (Matthew 4:1-11). Opportunity? Yes, opportunity. Jesus did not shy away from temptation, he walked towards it. Paul says as much when he contrasted Jesus with Adam (Romans 5:12-19). Where Adam was dispelled from the garden (wilderness) and overcome by sin, Jesus enters the wilderness (garden) to overcome sin. For this reason, one might say that Lent is a season of contrasts and contradictions symbolized by Jesus death on the cross of Good Friday and his resurrection symbolized by the empty tomb of Easter Sunday.
Each spring, beginning on Ash Wednesday, the church insists that we turn our thoughts towards our mortality and immoralities. We live in a culture that goes to great lengths to convince us we need to do the opposite. Yet, we face such things because we know that we can overcome them instead of being overcome by them. We are assured that we do not make this journey alone. We believe that God, who is full of grace and mercy, is with us.
Each Sunday in Lent we will read about a different person and encounter that shows the contrasts and contradictions between redemption and sin, life and death, justice and injustice, morality and immorality, heaven and earth. Who are these figures? How are we like them? How are we different? What can they teach us about the contradictions and contrasts in our own day and time?
